 I experienced this same type of failure here with Intel HD 4600
 graphics.  A newer (2.99.916) version of xf86-video-intel took care of
 the issue for me.
 
 Can you drop the following file into /usr/X11R7/lib/modules/drivers and
 see if it makes things any better?
