 A non-update build (w/o -u) seems to have done the trick.  The previous
 broken attempts left some crud lying around, so pixman wouldn't build
 because it thought it required rsvg.  I deleted all the packages and
 started over again.  All the depencies, including cairo, pango, and
 gtk2+ flew by and mail/thunderbird is finally building.
 
 So I guess the lesson is that if any *.mk files change, do a full (i.e.,
 non-update) build.
