A non-update build (w/o -u) seems to have done the trick. The previous
broken attempts left some crud lying around, so pixman wouldn't build
because it thought it required rsvg. I deleted all the packages and
started over again. All the depencies, including cairo, pango, and
gtk2+ flew by and mail/thunderbird is finally building.
So I guess the lesson is that if any *.mk files change, do a full (i.e.,
non-update) build.
