I just rebooted and indeed, xmms throws no errors and shows signs of
working (i.e. audio meters are working, timer is counting), but no
audio is emitted from built-in speakers. I reinstalled the hdaudio0
device, performed an "hdaudioctl get 0x00 > hd_before" to capture it's
current settings, "hdaudioctl set 0x00 0x01" to "jostle" the audio, then
"hdaudioctl get 0x00 0x01 > hd_after". The speakers are now making sounds,
but a "diff -bu on hd_before hd_after" yields no differences.
