There is an ongoing problem whereby the code from the FS on which the
volume's device node lives is sometimes used to process files on the
volume itself. This is almost certainly another manifestation.
Something must be severely wrong somewhere, because it ought not to be
architecturally possible for this to happen. One of these days I need
to go after it with a chainsaw.
