Reproducible deadlock on fss+dd and login/exit



Hello!

While diagnosing issues with fss+dd (that quickly crashed older version of NetBSD - 11_RC.4 or earlier) I found strange deadlock that is always reproducible on my setup (KVM/LibVirt Host with QXL and virtual Serial console, NetBSD Guest).

Known affected NetBSD Versions:
* CURRENT 11.99.7 20260724074047Z
* 11.0_RC6

All stacktraces below are for CURRENT with my kernel (called HP) where these debug options were enabled (but reproducible also on stock kernel):

Note: DIAGNOSTIC is already enabled on CURRENT.

WARNING: These commands often lead to irrecoverable filesystem (even when they should no harm) - this includes journaled FFS with log option.

Ensure that you have proper backup before running commands below!

On serial console I run these commands

fssconfig -cx fss0 / /root/backup
dd if=/dev/fss0 of=/dev/null bs=1024k

Wait until dd is running (typically 2 seconds or so) and then:

On local (QXL/wscons) console I perform:

login: as any user
exit

Exactly at the moment of exit(2) call (as later confirmed by dump) all I/O is blocked and all processes accessing fs/disk are in endless sleep. I can type anything on wscons console (chars are echoed) but nothing else happens.

After tricky recovery (that system was after dump/reset unbootable so I had to copy swap content to other non-snapshoted disk, than revert snapshot to original bootable system - copied raw dump back to swap partition and booted that system finally saving raw dump to /var/crash...

Tip: it was quite hard for me to find useful information how to use GDB with kernel core-dumps. I wrote detailed guide here: https://github.com/hpaluch/hpaluch.github.io/wiki/NetBSD-kernel-coredumps

Note: my MUA sometimes insert empty line after each non-empty line. Hopefully it does not happen this time (it always looks correctly before sending e-mail, but after...)


Question: anybody else able to reproduce this problem?
