The AC adapter will almost certainly have some form of communications with the laptop. This could be anything from a simple "I'm here" signal to a sophisticated bidirectional conversation where the laptop is told the AC adapter's model and S/N and the laptop signalling that it is indeed ready to receive power.
On a modern PC laptop I expect this to be managed by the ACPI subsystem.If we are accessing ACPI very early then this might be the location of the problem?? I'm speculating a bit here.
