OK, that sounds like the trackpad was not in extended-W mode.  I really
struggled with this for a long time, even though I thought I was doing
the right thing the trackpad did not change mode.  I have some changes
from someone off list that are supposed to work with some IBM trackpad
versions.  I thought I had merged the right bits but apparently I did
not.
