Ignoring the new disks with a new pool on. Do you still experience the
same crash if you create a file backed vnd(4) and use that to create a
zpool?

something like
dd if=/dev/zero of=~/disk.img bs=1m count=500
vndconfig vnd0 ~/disk.img
zpool create foo /dev/vnd0
