Nouveau still hangs on Dell Latitude E6400 laptop

Did a 'cvs update' last night, and just now tried to boot a freshly
built GENERIC kernel.  The last lines on the monitor are lots of drm
related things, and then

nouveaufb0 at nouveau0
nouveau0: info: registered panic notifier

...and then it just sits there.  The caps lock key toggles its LED, for
what it's worth.  Anything I should check to find out more about why?
