It is probably unrelated but I am grappling with the same sort of
situation trying to get an arduino uno to communicate... I have the
umodem driver picking up the device and it seems to be doing the right
thing but it simply does not talk.  If I plug the arduino into a windows
or linux machine then it comes up fine.
