Following this update, I no-longer see "Permission denied" errors from 'ttyflags' during startup. The specific problem of erroneous single-user operation has not appeared on these other systems (I'll again have access to the ones on which it was observed in a couple of days). Looking at the NFS root directories of the affected systems on the server did show the console device node owned by the unprivileged user I was logged in as at the time. This has been corrected on the server, but the affected machines have not been powered up since then. -- |/"\ John D.
