passed to the OS for the software to handle.

Steven is right. To make matters worse, ACPI doesn't specify how these hotkeys should be reported to the OS, so each vendor does it differently. What type of laptop are you using?

Ahh, nothing's ever simple with computers, is it?  I'm using an
LG X110, which is basically the same as an MSI Wind, in my
understanding, same hardware, different case and label on it.  One of
your typical 10" netbooks with an Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor, etc.
dmesg is below.  (Maybe there are LG-specific quirks, who knows...)
