This was caused by me adding wpa_supplicant twice, once in /etc/rc.conf and 
also in /etc/ifconfig.iwi0.  Sorry about the noise.

BTW, it looks like there is no need for /etc/ifconfig.iwi0 when running 
wpa_supplicant, but on the other hand it appears to do no harm either.  Is 
there an official recommendation?
