The POSIX wording is
"Execute compound-list in a subshell environment; see Shell Execution 
Environment.".

But anyway, the model that a () group behaves like a simple,
atomar command with its own exit state describes the behaviour
of ~all existing shells pretty well. I don't think it is a good
idea to start to interpret the poor spec by the letter.
