Doesn't make any difference, other than stopping console output sooner.

Maybe "blank display" is the wrong description. The backlight is
turned on brightly then slowly fades to a pattern of narrow vertical
lines.

I can start X11 and it doesn't report any errors but nothing happens
on the display.
