   I'm still getting a blank console display at boot with i386 on a 915GM,
   sources from today.

I have an uncommitted workaround for a similar problem on an i945GM,
which is to restore the call to i915_disable_vga in intel_modeset_init
(sys/external/bsd/drm2/dist/drm/intel_display.c) and remove the call
in intelfb_setconfig_task (sys/external/bsd/drm2/i915drm/intelfb.c).
Can you try that and let me know whether it works?

The reason it's uncommitted is that it causes the screen to be blanked
long before the mode switch actually happens and the console comes
back, so anything that goes wrong in the interim can't be reported.
