I wrote a syscalls API for ECL, but ECL is LGPL :)  At least it's now
easy to have ECL via pkgsrc.

But when Lua was discussed I think it was also because it could even be
used in the kernel, and I doubt Chicken or ECL could compete there in
terms of heap and stack footprint, even if they can compile to C
