/usr/bin/grep vs /rescue/grep

On netbsd-5 I observed the following:

% /usr/bin/grep --version
grep (GNU grep) 2.5.1 nb1
<plus some copyright mumble>

% /rescue/grep --version
grep version 20040505

What is the reason we install gnu/dist/grep (GNU grep) in /usr/bin
but usr.bin/grep (BSD grep) in /rescue? I assume size vs features?

Or are there other reasons to prefer GNU grep?
