The point here is that if there are more than 50 users on the system you probably
 want a directory server on your machine.
No, not on a system where reliability is the primary constaint.
If there may be network disconnections between the servers I would rather run
a replicated ldap server on the affected machines.

It's still less reliable than local files. Your replicated server may die.
True. Even though I would probably fix the problem then, it's up to the user to choose
what he wants to use.
