Neither I nor John is proposing changing the default name (e.g. the one determined by config.guess).  Our suggestion is simply to make "netbsd" mean "netbsdelf" rather than "netbsdaout", not to rename "netbsdelf" to "netbsd", or to change anything at all that currently uses the name "netbsdelf".

Yes exactly, and additionally, we don't plan on changing config.guess and friends, so anyone not explicitly specifying a config and getting "...netsdelf..." would continue to do so.

In short, nobody should notice it at all unless they are manually trying odd things.

I have never before seen anyone actually wonder about the names in this magic tuples, or suggest cosmetic changes.

I think that is probably the heart of any misunderstanding. I don't want to cause breakage, I am just proposing a "cosmetic" change that many people would find not worth the bother of proposing. It's important that only be a bother for me, and not be a bother for anyone that doesn't care. But as long as that criterion is met, I don't see any issue.
