We have an epoch in OpenBSD as well, you guys are the last ones out there
without one.
It did also solve issues like having to go backward when a specific version
turned out to be non-functional as a dependency for other stuff....
I don't like weird symbols either, we simply append v0, v1... for the EPOCH
marker.
