It turns out that I have to put
CC=clang
in my mk.conf. Otherwise despite PKGSRC_COMPILER=clang in mk.conf and export 
CC=clang, during the install phase, $CC will be gcc.

Can someone please enlighten me what PKGSRC_COMPILER is meant to mean?
