With PKG_DEVELOPER=yes and USE_DESTDIR=yes it builds and installs fine on 
an i386-linux system.

'make PKGSRC_RUN_TEST=yes test' also completed fine with only the one 
usual failure.

How should I know if it works?  That's what beta testers are for.  I
only coded it.
