Firefox 3 pkg: configure vs. configure.in

Could someone enlighten me how the firefox3 pkg intends to prevent regeneration
of configure from configure.in (as it only patches the former, but not the
latter). For some reason it does not seem to work for me (i.e. I get a configure
that differs vastly from configure.orig, a lot more than patch-ab explains).

Besides, lots of the configure tests programs fail because they call exit(3)
but do not include <stdlib.h> nor a proper prototype.
