Doesn't help any.

Looking further, it seems that cd player packages on NetBSD simply 
don't support digital audio extraction:

xmms -- relevant option is greyed out
KsCD -- relevant options (see help) are missing from prefs dialog
gxine -- "plugin missing" without any further hint
totem -- uses seemingly hard-coded device that is nonexistent
