Yes, as I mentioned in my original post, I used a 3rd machine (my iMac) to passively observe (both with tcpdump and with Wireshark).  And, yes, a multitude of other things work just fine on that network (my home WiFi system has separate virtual networks for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands to avoid band steering problems on poorly-behaved client devices; the 2.4GHz network I am connecting the RPI to is the one that e.g. all of my thermostats, my printer, and whatnot are on, and I’m able to join that network just fine from my iPhone or MacBook).
