Socket option to timestamp UDP packets in the kernel

Respected Sir,
I am interested in the project as given in the subject. But I have
very less experience in such activities. May I know what  additional
things I have to learn and practice upon so that I can make a
beautiful contribution to this project. Also, I am little unsure about
the programming language used here, though i know kernel is written in
C, so your help will be very grateful to me. This will b my first
contribution to open source projects, which is a very proud thing to
do.

I would like to tell you the following skills of mine so that you can
see whether I am skilled enough for this project.
 1. an intermediate level programming ability in C (gcc) and have
solved many problem sets in codechef.com.
 2. have an  intermediate level programming ability in C++ (standard C++)
 3. have a beginner level programming ability in JAVA, android and
shell programming.
 4. I am a II year engineering student (computer science and engineering)
