cn_magic stuff in com.c

Hi all,
I noticed that com_kgdb_attach1() in dev/ic/com.c has the comment  
"XXXfvdl this shouldn't be needed, but the cn_magic goo expects this  
to be initialized".

Would I be right in thinking that if com_common_putc() and  
com_common_getc() didn't call cn_check_magic(), then this  
initialisation wouldn't be needed?
