I can reproduce this:
$ mkfifo xxx
$ dd if=/dev/zero of=xxx
[another terminal]
$ od xxx
0000000  000000 000000 000000 000000 000000 000000 000000 000000
*
[here it crashes]

If I switch off the second processor (this is a dual-core),
the crash doesn't happen, so it looks like a locking problem.
