   fix following wregexp bug reported in current-user:
     - . doesn't match anything
     - [] groups containing more than one character don't match anything
   introduced by -Wsign-compare fix.

this makes all my searching work again with "set iclower" in effect,
and it was pretty annoying not having searching work!
