This was not done to reduce the size.  The reason behind this change
was to make the kernel boot as quickly as possible (some devices in
GENERIC add a noticeable delay to the boot process, which is extremely
annoying in case you need to do frequent reboot cycles), and to
provide users a simple template they can use for custom kernels when
doing kernel development work under this virtual machine.

Ideally, this kernel would be defined as "include everything else
*except* the device drivers, and then let me define the exact drivers
I need".  Dunno if that is possible with the current implementation of
config.
