As the person who wrote a lot of our install build machinery in the
first place, let me say bluntly that, the mess lots of people have
made of a clean and simple set of makefiles notwithstanding, the
amount of work involved in fixing all this is indeed pretty low. I
don't understand why people are afraid of it. And no, I'm not going to
do the work -- I don't even have time to keep up with my email most
days. However, I've done this job before and it isn't hard.
