I'm not sure if it would work either, but you can certainly do
byte I/O over a USB to Centronics adapter.
I guess I'll have to get some old // port device and try it. :)

Well, I'm not sure about the specifics, but certainly as well as usb
printers there are "usb parallel cables" that terminate in a usb at
one end and a centronics printer // port at the other, and they are
matched as ulpt.

Whether you can plug a ZIP or whatever into that rather than a
printer, I'm not sure, but I can imagine users expecting to be able
to.  And, I suppose, if I had a laptop without "legacy" ports and only
usb, I rather might want to.
