If I understood his statements correctly, there are two deficiencies,
neither of which apply nearly as strongly to pkgsrc (where this
scheme is undeniably working) as they do to basesrc.

 - The date doesn't include information about the branch.  In other
   words, it doesn't tell me what code the package contains.

 - The date is the date of compilation, not the date of the source
   being compiled.  In other words, it doesn't tell me what code the
   package contains.

If Jim is wrong on this, or I've misunderstood him, then presumably
we're actually closer to a solution than we think.

Argue it out, fellas, and come up with something that meets all
the various requirements - but first and foremost that lets people
easily identify what they're running.  Otherwise, don't bother,
because you haven't improved on the present situation, which for
all its warts at least people are familiar with.
