Please back this part out.  I have comments about this, and a suggested
"compromise" between your proposal and cgd's.

I had not yet commented, because I have been very busy on another project.
Chris asked you to get consensus from others before you committed this
code, and I specifically TOLD you yesterday that comments were forthcoming
from me, yet you checked this in anyway?

Anyway, the rest of it can be modified in-tree, but this part MUST be
backed out because it affects the userland-visible interface, which *IS*
going to change.
