I've tried to provide the nvidia firmware from Debian's
firmware-nonfree_20161130.orig.tar.xz

Putting the files into

/usr/libdata/firmware/nvidia/gm206/gr

or

/usr/libdata/firmware/nouveau/gm206/gr

isn't enough, it still doesn't find them. Is the full searched path printed somewhere?
