Oh man.   that's perfect.  I really only need zvols;  I don't 
care about mounting the filesystem.  (I do care about snapshots and
the zfs-send/ zfs recieve stuff...  ZIL would also be nice, but that's 
likely... more difficult to do safely.)   I really like the idea
of treating user data as, you know, block devices.  From that point
of view, zfs is superior, as doing incremental transfers of block 
devices without having knowledge of what the data inside is tends
to be, well, expensive.  

hm.  http://wiki.netbsd.org/users/haad/porting_zfs/  is somewhat out 
of date...  where do I go for more info?
