thanks for the quick reply! :)

after writing the mail I went to the machine to attach a keyboard physically 
(USB), but also this one was either not realized or the machine was really 
frozen, I couldn't interact.

I upgraded the firmware of the controllers and the hard drives, but I'm not too 
optimistic about that - all machines run with the same firmware releases and 
this is the only machine freezing.

Yes, I think this is possible.

Any chance of re-directing the console to this emulated serial port without 
re-booting? I boot the machine with grub using

title Xen 3.0 / NetBSD (sda0, vga)
  root(hd0,0)
  kernel (hd0,a)/xen.gz dom0_mem=512m com1=115200,8n1
  module (hd0,a)/netbsd5.xen bootdev=sd0a ro console=pc

(I have no "serial" line in the menu.lst yet).
