On the desktop side, there are cheap motherboards where you can plug in
8GB RAM (4x 2GB) or 16GB RAM (4x 4GB).

On the server side, there are multi socket machines where you can
plug in 8GB (4x 2GB) or 16GB (4x 4GB) for each socket.

Note, the 4GB DIMMs are very expensive.
