I've actually found the backends to be worse than the frontends.  I've
added arch-independent features to gcc without too much pain - but I've
tried at least twice to do things with the backends and I'm not sure I
ever succeeded; if so it was something pretty much trivial.

I certainly feel far more comfortable messing with the frontends than
the backends.
