even fit into a 5v-only slot. (And I think I've checked this when I
was fighting with this specific card, last year, and came to the
conclusion that it must have been something different -> new theory:

Look for the notches in the card-edge connector. If the notch is
on the bracket end, it's a 3.3V-only card. If the notch is away from
the bracket end, it's a 5V-only card. If both notches are present,
it's a "universal" card that supports both voltages.
