Is that necessary?  When I tried bochs the few years back, it was 
pre-built; install the binary.

Qemu works rather well on an old Pentium PC.  I've forgotten the specs 
and the machine is at another site but it does the job very nicely.

I wonder whether, under QEMU, you ran much larger  programs than I 
tried.
