Here's the current status for the curious:

Michael sent me a xconfig file that worked when he tested it.  Reboot.
 He asked me to try -current, so I downloaded a 5.1RC4 binary.
Reboot.

So, it looks to this uninformed viewer that the PCI bus code has
changed in some way that generates this fatal interrupt storm.
