Pardon my ignorance, but how does one ose these files?

libxaa.so goes to /usr/X11R6/lib/modules, it contains XFree86's hardware acceleration framework, crime_drv.so goes to /usr/X11R6/ lib/modules/drivers.
You've got an O2 running very recent -current at hand I hope?

Let's assume I have a stock NetBSD-current snapshot from ftp.netbsd.org:/pub/NetBSD-daily/HEAD... what else besides moving those files into place needs to be setup?

Not much, getting X to probe for crime doesn't work yet.

I wonder if we should hand out ready-made XFree86 config files (also for the Shark...)

Shark's XF86Config should work, all you need to change is the display device driver, from 'wsfb' to 'crime' and DefaultDepth to 24. The crime driver will use whatever video mode the firmware set up, only in 32bit colour.

have fun
Michael
