Is that still the 3.1 userland?
This is -current on my GigE G4, works just fine and so do the 100MBit gems I
have in various laptops:
gem0: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,NOTRAILERS,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
media: Ethernet autoselect (1000baseT full-duplex)
inet 192.168.0.19 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.0.255

The capabilities did change at some point, IIRC to reflect some hardware bugs.
