Problem with my PowerBook NVRAM

Hi,

maybe any of the Apple specialists knows what to do:

After a bad kernel crash my PowerBook5,6 no longer enters OpenFirmware and
doesn't play the startup chime anymore. It shows a grey screen with an
Apple icon instead.

I can still enter OF with Alt-Cmd-O-F, though. There I tried to reenable
auto-boot by:

  setenv auto-boot? false

But it didn't help. The variable was reset to false on the next reboot. Then
I also changed:

  setenv use-nvramrc? true

But same problem again. Also this variable was reset.

What can I do? And I want my startup-chime back! ;)
