Out of curiosity - why do you want to use Xmacppc? It doesn't offer

I know and I have to admit: I'm using Xmacppc for years now
just out of laziness :-)

Heh ;)

8 bit colour depth serves my needs and lack of acceleration
hasn't been an issue with a desktop consisting of one xterm
running screen and one xclock plus one xload (occasionally
accompanied by gv and xli (and emacs on sundays)).

Even with that you may run into colour map trouble at some point ;)

DPMS support would be the main reason for using XFree86 or
Xorg but they wouldn't dim or switch off the backlight on
an Apple Laptop, wouldn't they?

No. If the graphics chip controls the backlight ( that's the case with at least some mobility radeons ) the Xserver could turn it off - I don't think XFree86's or Xorg's radeon drivers actually do that though. With other graphics chips the backlight is controlled by some other means ( like PMU commands on older PowerBooks ) - nothing you'd want to put into a graphics driver. Actually, we could teach X to call ioctl(WSDISPLAYIO_SVIDEO) when it wants to turn off the lights, it does that ( well, it calls the /dev/ fb equivalent ) with sbus graphics chips and some of our framebuffer drivers could then do what's needed. I have no idea how backlight is controlled with nvidia graphics chips but I'd suspect it's the graphics controller itself.

have fun
Michael
