Good call on the iBookHacks option, but it didn't make a difference.
The kernel *really* crashes, it doesn't just forget to restore the
console properly. For example, when I'm connected via ssh to the box,
the connection is dropped when I exit X. When I am playing music via
audio/musicpd, audio stops being output (resulting in the typical ugly
endless looping of the last 1/2 second or so audio fragment).
