So, yes. I've suspected the changes from Debian etc. to stock cdrtools 
to be the problem.
Unfortunately the cdrtools author (Joerg Schilling) passed away two or 
so years ago.

Can't we fix cdrtools and send it upstream? People have taken over 
Joerg's position.
