I just tried again.
This time I pulled the keyboard cable out just after I hit command-b.
The mouse connects to the keyboard, so effectively this removes both in one 
action.
The booter operated correctly and booted the kernel, but this time it hangs 
with:

"adb0 (direct, IIsi series): 0 targets."
